Welcome to 2023! To kick off our first edition of the year, we start by taking a look at the Ghana Government’s recent announcement of its ePharmacy platform.
The ePharmacy platform basically allows users to search online for their prescriptions in their area. Pharmacies can register to be on the platform and users can purchase their prescriptions online and have them delivered.
There have been some rumblings from the tech community as to why the government is even going into this field.
mPharma, a health tech startup, has something similar called “Mutti” which offers similar services.
So essentially, the government is competing with mPharma in a way.
Is online purchase of medication really a problem the Government should be solving? Shouldn’t they be incentivising platforms like mPharma and other startups like that to grow?
The government announced that they were working on a universal digital medical records platform in 2017. But we haven’t had any updates yet on that project. Maybe they should focus on that.
