Issue #9 - Twitter Sets Up Shop In Ghana
Today, Jack Dorsey officially announced that Twitter would be setting up its base in Ghana.
🇬🇭 Twitter is now present on the continent.
Thank you Ghana and @NAkufoAddo. #TwitterGhana https://t.co/tt7KR3kvDg
With this announcement, Twitter will now officially have a presence in Africa. The announcement was followed by Twitter announcing remote job roles for local talent in Ghana.
This is a win for Ghana’s tech scene as most US or Europe based tech companies tend to set up in Nigeria or South Africa whenever they arrive on the continent.
Why Choose Ghana Over Nigeria?
One of the reasons that Twitter stated that they would setting up in Ghana was because of Ghana’s role as the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) as well as having partnerships with groups like Afrochella and the Hacklab foundation.
But still, why choose Ghana over a place like Nigeria?
There are speculations and rumors as to the “real” reason Twitter choose Ghana instead of Nigeria.
Last year, Jack Dorsey was played a big role in advocating for the protestors in the Lekki Toll Gate killings in which police officers shot at peaceful protestors.
Twitter setting up at office in Nigeria might have not been the best move as the company might have been frustrated by officials and their lawsuits as well as the government.
These are speculations however but they are not too far fetched.
But You Can't Ignore Nigeria
But despite setting up in Ghana, most of the job roles Twitter is promoting does show Nigeria still has pull.
In their “Curator” description, applications would have to pay attention to what’s happening in Nigeria.
It’s not to say that Ghana doesn’t have stories, but it would be hard to ignore what happens in Nigeria on a daily basis, from fintech regulation, crypto and other social issues.
Will The Twitter News Attract More Companies
With the Twitter news, you would wonder if more foreign based tech companies will also set up shop in Ghana.
Would Stripe make Ghana it’s homebase following the acquisition of Paystack and offer remote jobs? Will Jack Dorsey also look at setting an office with Square now that he has good relations with Ghana?
Only time will tell. For now, it’s a good win for the local tech scene in Ghana 🇬🇭
