To E-Levy Or Not To E-Levy?
Currently, the biggest tech news in Ghana is the introduction of an E-Levy tax which is set to be introduced in January 2022. The new levy will place a 1.75% tax on electronic transactions in Ghana including mobile money transfers, bank to bank transfers, and POS transactions.
There has been a lot of pushback from industry players including the eCommerce Association of Ghana.
Currently, there have been some revisions to the budget, and will be a reduction of the tax from 1.75% to 1.5%. There have been more calls to reduce it 1% but nothing concrete has been confirmed yet.
One thing is for sure: There will be an E-Levy tax next year and this will affect digital money in Ghana. The question is what effect it will have once its implemented.
