"Will 'Okada' Cars Make Your Accra Commute Worse?
If you never heard about “Okadas”, here’s a small refresher: An “Okada” is a motorbike rider who provides transportation services for people to go from one location to another.
Okadas were banned in 2011 but that hasn’t stopped riders for continuing their services especially due to heavy demand and stagnant traffic in the city of Accra.
The current government administration has rolled out a new initiative called “Okadas For Cars” which is aimed at Okada riders to switch their motorbikes for small vehicles.
Although it seems like a good effort, the initiative could do more damage than good by increasing traffic in Accra which is already congested.
As more ride-hailing services enter the market and increase, Accra could be worse in the future when trying to traverse through the city. So the question is: “Will Okadas make traffic in Accra better? Or Worse?”
